How important is it to have fun in your life? How about your workplace?

Tom Peters had a great blog posted the other day over at TomPeters.com, which opens with a quote from Fran Tarkenton (the NFL Quarterback)...
"If it's not fun you're not doing it right."

Bang on!

How many people spend the vast majority of their lives not having fun?

Tom Peter's advice?

  • Don't do it unless it's fun.
  • Make it fun. (Always possible)
  • Make it fun for others. (Which makes it fun/more fun for you.)

When I was a Senior Director in a very conservative company where "fun" was somewhat frowned upon due to the "crushing deadlines" and "professional atmosphere", I booked the largest conference room we had, brought in a Nintendo Wii and some pizza, and let my team (all in their 20's) have fun for 2 hours. On the conference room schedule it was called "Team Strategy Session".

Were those 2 hours wasted? NO WAY! We were under a lot of pressure during that time. But you can only push people so far.
