I read a good article not too long ago from (of all places) NRB (National Religious Broadcasters) Magazine. The title was "Twenty Time-Tested Tactics for Improving Your PeopleSkills" by Dr. Michael Zigarelli -- Associate Professor of Managementat Regent University Graduate School of Business. It first appeared in the Business Review of the school --(Read the article here) Lesson 1:Don't Complain... "it doesn't get you very far because people tend to react negatively to toxic talk.Instead, offer potential solutions when you identify problems, or say nothing at all." Short, simple, sage advice... so why don't people follow it?I have to admit -- it would be sometimes easier to walk into yourboss's office, slump down in the chair, and verbally vomit a formula offrustration... some deepest despair... a chronic complaint... RIGHT!Leaders are not paid to whine... they are paid for results... forproblem solving... for executing the strategy. If we are to be trusted with responsibility now, and in the future,we need to walk in with potential solutions to any problem, without"complaining or arguing". There is always a place to dialog, to discuss, to suggest, and yes, sometimes critique.Complaining just isn't in any of those places... As a friend of mine used to say (regularly)... It's just a thought. |
